Hi all,

You can now try MagicPunk (multiplayer!) at https://magicpunk.fly.dev

MagicPunk isn’t quite Gunbound, but the original game was made by people who were very close to Gunbound.
Internally, the engine is very similar to Gunbound even if the gameplay is completely different. The file formats, behavior and code appear to be largely copied from Gunbound. The usual quirks such as low frame rates, 16 bit colors, and the distinct pixel font are all present.

The backend is rebuilt purely from reverse engineering the one client that was found on Archive.org. It’s rough, but should work well enough to let you experience MagicPunk as it was launched in 2004.

(If this isn’t the right place for MagicPunk, please feel free to move or delete the thread. I stumbled upon this place when searching for the string “comsik” and felt like this might be the same crowd that would find this interesting)

Cheers

n.b. The hostrocket firewall thing is a major PITA

oh, huh. That is suddenly. Really cool to see someone else digging into The Creator's old work. Really want to look into it and play some games. Only ever could record footage of solo gameplay.

Also, kinda interesting but if you right click the video > open video in a new tab Chrome just hard crashes. Neat!

Resolved after re-enabling IPV6; still not on my W7 VM though

Trying run this on a Windows 7 VM; I can click the splash screens fine but for some reason the World List is completely unclickable. I hover over the buttons and nothing seems to happen and I also hear nothing. Pressing buttons work fine though and I hear the MP "clicky" sounds.

EDIT: hmm, bit confused. Getting the very same issue on a different machine. Is the server down?
EDIT 2: Right, I remember now that I totally killed IPV6 for reasons. I guess I need look into that
EDIT 3: Yup, works fine on yet another network. Guess I'll see if I can fix it
EDIT: 4 yeah resolved after re-enabling IPV6
EDIT 5: oh my gah and I broke it again. I look into it after work since I want to play it lol

Kinda shame I can't get it working on my Windows 7 VM since there seems to be sound issues on W10 even with the rewrite (although no static ones)

Turns out the sound issue I was facing (sounds cutting off) also happens on the W7 VM, while that didn't happen in the vanilla game for me (See: Here) or maybe something else is up

Anyway, got to play a few rounds with a friend and we had fun. Thank you for preserving this but I totally see why this got scrapped rather quickly. Now I feel kinda bad for my other friend because I asked if he could implement multiplayer support, since i was kinda bored 1 game later...
